BEIRUT SINFONIETTA

Peter and the Wolf is a musical tale composed by Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953). Naive, but refined and suggestive, the work has met with unfailing success since its creation in 1936, both young and old. The purpose of the work is to introduce certain instruments of the orchestra. While the reciter tells the story, the orchestra punctuates the story with musical interludes where the different protagonists are personified by instruments. All characters have a particular theme that appears each time they enter the story and which Prokofiev develops as the tale unfolds.

Peter and the Wolf also carries a moral: with courage and cunning, a child neutralizes the object of all his fears and anxieties. Beirut Sinfonietta was founded in the 1960s by the former President of Jeunesses Musicales du Liban, Antoine Medawar who used to say: “We make music because we can’t just passively listen to CDs; there is better to do, the important thing is to play”. These words go back more than forty years, but this message is still relevant.

The ensemble is made up of professional musicians (professors at the National Conservatory of Music and members of the Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra) joined by advanced and well-rounded students experienced in the technique of their instrument.
