PROGRAM

An evening of vibrant rhythms and melodies of Brazil as the Arthur Satyan Quartet takes the stage. Led by acclaimed pianist and composer Arthur Satyan, the quartet will transport the audience to the heart of Brazil with fresh, masterful interpretations of beloved bossa nova and samba classics.

Joining Satyan are three exceptional musicians: Khachatur Savzyan on double bass, Kevin Safadi on percussion, and Fouad Afra on drums. Together, they will pay tribute to the timeless music of legends such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Chico Buarque, Vinicius de Moraes, and more.

ARTHUR SATYAN

Arthur Satyan is a jazz pianist, composer, and educator, born in Yerevan, Armenia, into a family of renowned Armenian composers. In the early 1990s, he became one of the city’s most sought-after pianists, performing with various ensembles and state big bands, while completing his Master’s degree in Composition and Piano at the Komitas State Conservatory of Yerevan.

In 1996, Arthur moved to Beirut, Lebanon, with his American trio featuring Jack Gregg and Steve Phillips, to perform at the grand opening of the Middle East’s largest casino, Casino du Liban. Two years later, he joined the faculty of the Lebanese National Higher Conservatory of Music, where he currently serves as Professor of Classical Piano and Dean of the Jazz Department.

Arthur has performed and collaborated with celebrated jazz artists including Larry Coryell, Charles Davis, Ray Vega, Ed Cherry, Joe Lee Wilson, Melissa Walker, Joe Louis Walker, and Deborah Davis. His exceptional artistry has earned admiration from legends such as Ahmad Jamal, Zakir Hussain, René McLean, and André Ceccarelli. Over the years, he has also jammed with Steve Potts, Stefano Di Battista, Arturo Sandoval, and many others.

He has released three critically acclaimed albums: Art for Art’s Sake (2003), ARTology (2013), and Playing Around (2020).

KEVIN SAFADI

Kevin Safadi is a Lebanese drummer and percussionist known for his dynamic versatility and collaborations with leading artists on both the Lebanese and international music scenes. His performances span a wide range of genres, from jazz and samba to Latin and Afro-Cuban music.

During his recent European tour, Kevin performed with elite samba schools from Germany, France, Portugal, and Brazil. He is also the founder and artistic director of “Segundo Bloco”, the first samba drumming ensemble in the region, dedicated to bringing the vibrant rhythms of samba to a wider audience.

 

FOUAD AFRA

Born in Beirut, Fouad Afra graduated in Communication Arts from Beirut University College in 1987. A self-taught drummer, Latin percussionist, and guitarist, he began his musical journey as part of a rock band before transitioning to the jazz scene in Beirut.

Over the years, Fouad has recorded and performed with many celebrated artists, including Fairuz, Julia Boutros, Ziad Rahbani, and Arthur Satyan, as well as international jazz musicians such as Murali Coryell, Deborah Davis, Ray Vega, Ed Cherry, and Lydia Warren.

Today, he is regarded as one of the most prominent and respected drummers in the region.

 

KHACHATUR SAVZYAN

Khachatur Savzyan is a double bassist from Yerevan, Armenia, and a graduate of the Komitas State Conservatory of Yerevan.

Balancing a career between classical and jazz, he has held principal and subprincipal positions with orchestras such as the Lebanese National Philharmonic Orchestra, the Armenian National Symphony Orchestra, and the Armenian National Opera Theatre. At the same time, he has been an active figure in the jazz scenes of both Yerevan and Beirut.

As one of the most in-demand double bassists in the region, Khachatur has recorded and performed with leading classical and jazz musicians, while also mentoring and training many of the double bassists currently active in Lebanon’s music scene.

Splitting his time between Lebanon and Armenia, he remains involved in a wide range of projects, exploring genres from classical and jazz to Armenian folk and free improvisation.
